Increasing internet safety

The European Parliament will adopt measures designed to increase the safety of children on the internet. Many youth spend a considerable amount of time online, and concerns about access to pornography, harrassment, and manipulation have led the EP Civil Liberties Committee to recommend that a program be developed to protect children.

Proposed strategies include a “child safe” website label and kid.eu domain names. Hotlines and helplines have also been suggested. Greater information-sharing among among member countries was also emphasized, as information that is uploaded in one location could be accessed anywhere.
