A researcher from the University of Cambridge asked about the reactions of children and adolescents born after artificial inesmination to being told about their origins. Medical News Today reported the finding that the most common reaction was curiosity. However, reactions varied according to the age at which the information was shared. The number of people reporting confusion, shock and anger increased substantially for those who were told in late adolescence or adulthood. Feelings of upset, numbness, and betrayal were also more likely to be reported by participants who were older when they learned of their origin. Some participants described learning of their paternity as a traumatic event. The study concluded that age of disclosure is an important factor in determining children’s feelings about their conception.
